XXVIII. DESSERT

Aarvo leapt out of door and ricocheted between the buildings like a mad splinter, trying to get as far away as possible from Espris—Espris who had mocked him, who had humiliated him just to show him that he had no way out. But was that really the case? Did Espris really know everything, see everything? He couldn’t believe it—he didn’t want to believe it. There had to be a way to escape him! But what if there wasn’t? What was he going to do? He had to resist—he couldn’t give in.

He wandered aimlessly through the city, unable to decide what to do, unable to stop walking, tormented by a burning hunger and thirst, until a misty glimmer lit up in the darkness of his mind.

He started to follow that blurry light, he followed it without thinking—he followed it without even knowing he was following it—until his footsteps delivered him in front of the brightly lit entrance to Kel Ikel Arcade.

Only then did Aarvo emerge from his own dark thoughts to realize where he was. Why had he gone there? Why there? A confused and anguished feeling twisted in his throat, but he went in anyway, attracted by the lights in the bowels of the building as if by a call he could not escape.

In the delirium of pain and apprehension that split his head, he almost didn’t recognize the place. Everywhere he turned everything was different from how he remembered it. The dust was gone. Everything was smooth and clean: the floors, the glass windows, even all the small objects scattered throughout the vast spaces and countless rooms. There was no more dust. Espris had wiped it away as if it had never existed. There was no longer even the memory of it.

He went into the innermost rooms in search of ice and pools of water, but even those had followed the dust: gone. There was no more ice on the walls or in the dark corners of the rooms. There were no puddles left on the floors either; Espris had vaporized them like the hope from his heart.

And the sweets…?

If there was even one left, one measly piece of stale rock….

Aarvo let his feet drag him down another corridor, then another, then stairs, corners and walkways one after the other, until a hollow appeared on his left between the clean, shining glass windows, a recess he recognized.

He approached until he was facing it. He turned around.

It was true: Espris knew everything, saw everything.

Motionless in the middle of the hallway, Aarvo let his eyes wander across the empty room—the same room that until recently had been full of dust and stale sweets, and now showed neither.

There were only two things in plain sight on the counter in front of him: a crystal glass and a white plate. In the glass was water, while on the white plate… the ancient dessert of his ancestors.

Espris had foreseen everything. Not only did he see everything, but he could also see into his mind.
